Directorz, Applebox Films
Interview Number 1
Sifat Nusrat (SN): How are you?
Raka Noshin Nower (RNN): I am very fine.
(SN): Let’s start with your student life. So, what about your student life?
(RNN): I studied in Holly Cross School and college. After completing my HSC from Holly Cross, I started doing engineering at Ahsanullah university of Science and Technology. I was in the department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. After completing my engineering, I started my journey with Applebox Films. I started my journey as a casting assistant but I had to work in other department like costume, art etc. I have to work over all in every department. So, I was like an intern there. At that time, I made a short film on behalf of my friend for his thesis. I shot that with a 60D. When I show the film at my office, I had a promotion. I join the directorial team as an Assistant Director (AD). From then started my journey with directorial team. On January 2017 I started giving direction. My first project was a TVC of Sun silk. After that I had done a lot of work for different agencies. I made different AV, TVC. I have a habit of editing videos. I edited my friend’s birthday video, travel video, funny video of friends or many mores and uploaded that on internet. From then my friends started knowing me as a media person as I do different type of film related things and at a time, I started my journey as a director. I am with apple box for 8 years and since 2 and half years I am giving direction independently but with the banner of Applebox.
(SN): We know you have an educational background on Engineering. Then why did you switch to media?
(RNN): I always wanted to doing my graduation on engineering because my mother wants me and my brother study engineering. So, I gave her the engineering degree and she gave me the independence to choose anything that I like. I came to applebox through my friend Rafi who worked in applebox and continuing.
(SN): Now a days many of young generation doing their study in film and media, what do you want to say about that?
(RNN): It’s a very positive side. There are many things to tell about this. They are very lucky to have the opportunity to study about film and media and hope they will do much better than us because we did not get the chance. They can learn a lot, the have the opportunity where we did not have the textual knowledge. So, they must have to utilize the chance. (SN): Are you giving direction only for television commercial? (RNN): At present I am giving direction for TVC, OVC and documentaries. In future want to make music videos and after that want to make film.
(SN): In our country we are making big budget TVCs but no one is willing to invest for films. So, do you think different companies should come forward to invest in film? (RNN): If the brand doesn’t find any possibility of their benefit, they will never invest for your film. But if we can make the authority understand that, they will get benefits from the film, they will must invest or one should have to finance for his own film. (SN): What is the present situation of Bangladeshi Media? (RNN): What type of situation? (SN): Can we say Bangladeshi media established? (RNN): Of course, Bangladeshi Media is doing really well. A lot of production is taking place so it feels really good for me. (SN): Do you think girls should come forward in direction? (RNN): Of course, they should. As an example, you can see Chownika Choudhury is doing remarkable job. (SN): What to do you think about Indian investor is investing in our films? (RNN): They are not actually investing in our films for the betterment of our industry. All they are doing is making money of us by using our local talents. (SN): Do you think our films are up to mark for international market? (RNN): No, they are not but I hope if we can utilize our resources and get enough financial support, then definitely we can do better in international market. As films like Television, Oggatonama and Komola Rocket. (SN): Can you provide any ideas where you think we really need to work on? (RNN): Firstly, our knowledge about the films need to be accurate. As you can see our artists and directors are not that much qualified on their fields and off-course our equipment’s need to upgrade for the quality work.
(SN): When we can expect to see you in films and what sort of films you have interest in making? (RNN): IN SHA ALLAH very soon. I am actually planning to make an independent film. (SN): Best of luck. Now tell us something out of the box. As I know you are a travel freak person. Which one is your favorite place? (RNN): It’s Nepal even it was my first travel outside of country. (SN): Can you share a memorable experience from the trip? (RNN): That was The Himalaya when I saw the first glimpse. It was breathtaking. I love everything about Nepal and I started doing travel video since then. (SN): Thank so much for your valuable time. (RNN): My pleasure dear.
