Course Code and Name : MSJ 11211 Mass Communication

Topic: Mask Making

Project Date: Spring 2019

Project Description: A group of students from the University have been involved in a project to build a mask based on the CI Theme, "Broken Window Theory". According to the idea of criminology, the presence of crime, antisocial behaviour, and civil disturbance in a city's physical environment may serve as a breeding ground for other criminal activity. The problems we see now pose a severe risk for the future. Before they escalate into national crises, we need to pinpoint the root causes and take action.

Project Justification: There are many causes of road accidents, like competition with one another, risky overtaking, nobody obeying the traffic rules and regulations, driving, sleepy mood, driving on the wrong side, and not following the line. The main problem is if anyone breaks the rules, we also follow if.

2.1 Mask Exhibition at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

Background of the Theme:

The Broken Windows Theory postulates that the neglect of any problematic issues in a specific context has a significant impact on individuals' perceptions of the state of affairs and is conducive to the emergence of additional problems. The fundamental premise underlying the notion is that the maxim "prevention is better than cure" is rendered into a theoretical construct suitable for scholarly discourse. An occurrence of disruption may prompt individuals to render judgment upon it, disregard it, and, to a certain degree, entice others to pursue a similar course. Provided that the aforementioned act is not promptly suppressed and prohibited, it will inevitably disseminate, potentially leading to its normalization and an escalation of criminal activity within society. Consequently, in any given sector of operation, the presence of a seemingly insignificant issue or imperfection- referred to as a "broken window" within the context of the situation- can serve as a catalyst for a series of ensuing broken windows unless it is proactively addressed and remedied.

The Message

Our approach to incorporating this theory within the framework of Curriculum Integration does not seek to overtly showcase the impact - either positive or negative - of its application. Instead, our aim was to disseminate a succinct proclamation that our heedlessness has evolved into a significant obstacle, rendering the broken windows theory ineffective in its execution within the social milieu. The current societal trend of readily accepting the detrimental effects of harm is resulting in an ongoing state of devastation. It is postulated that by identifying and mitigating the actual interference, or the noise associated with the components of communication, it may be possible to devise and implement effective strategies for informing the general populace about broken windows policing methods.

Layout

Initially, the fabrication process involved the application of multiple layers to the facial aspect of the mask, in order to achieve an optimal level of uniformity, and subsequently, a sleek and polished exterior texture. After affixing it to the blackboard as a means of stabilization, we erected a comprehensive schematic diagram illustrating our conceptualized vision. It was determined that the implementation of an abstract painted background, complemented by an amalgamation of symbolic print-outs laced with accompanying messages, as well as photographs of tangible occurrences and posters would be efficacious. The decision was made to maintain the pristine and unadorned visage of the mask, whilst incorporating a diverse range of chromatic shades including but not limited to variants of blue, white, yellow, and red within the abstract painted design. The inclusion of mossy grass on the mask was deemed pivotal in the dissemination of the intended message as well as for ornamental purposes; hence, we opted to implement it.

Exhibition

The exposition was hosted at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, a venerated venue renowned for accommodating major exhibitions. "To prime for the exhibition, our art was installed one day prior to the designated showcase." The subsequent day, we observed that it had been situated in a strategic location. At the conclusion of proceedings, each participant's name and corresponding caption were affixed to the right margin of the board. Upon the onset of the exhibition, there was a notable influx of attendees. Our mask received positive appraisals from the visitors in attendance. During the occasion of our exhibition, interviews were conducted with both guests and faculty members, with a specific emphasis on the perceptions and insights of the younger demographic. Given their perceived status as the foundation of the national fabric, we sought the insights of individuals in this category with regard to the message featured on our face masks. In particular, we solicited their recommendations to inform our decision-making process. It was imperative that we ascertain the comprehensibility of the message imparted. The attendees responded affirmatively that there is a clear comprehension of our thematic framework. The efforts undertaken were acknowledged with appreciation. The parties reached a concurrence with the perspectives espoused by us. Additionally, a discourse and an interactive segment consisting of inquiries and responses were being conducted within the auditorium. Subsequently, a comprehensive evaluation was conducted to scrutinize the entirety of the artistic products generated by the undergraduate students of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB). All individuals exhibited exceptional qualities.

Realization:

In conclusion, it can be stated that our experience with the mask making project was a thoroughly enriching and fulfilling one. The acquisition of knowledge and the provision of societal contributions were both accomplished during the course of our endeavors. Undoubtedly, the experience was quite remarkable. Despite the rigorous efforts required to complete all tasks until the end, we found immense pleasure in carrying out the same. The successful completion of the project has conferred a sense of elation upon us.

Learning and Outcome (Self-Reflection)

I've developed an essential skill set during my learning process that has allowed me to produce work using a variety of mediums, including paint, drawing, and sculpting. I now see how art can be a powerful medium for conveying ideas. Additionally, I've learned how to create masks, which calls for both artistic and technical abilities. By effectively communicating my views and ideas with others, I have also honed my communication abilities, which has enabled me to get fresh insights and viewpoints. I can now express myself creatively and communicate effectively, which are abilities that I can use in many different facets of my life.
